The site navigation utilizes arrow, enter, escape, and space bar key commands. Left and right arrows move across top level links and expand / close menus in sub levels. Up and Down arrows will open main level menus and toggle through sub tier links. Enter and space open menus and escape closes them as well. Tab will move on to the next part of the site rather than go through menu items.

Construction of the U.S. Capitol began in 1793. In November 1800, Congress met for the first time in the completed north wing.  Major extensions to the north and south wings were authorized in the 1850s as the nation expanded westward and representation increased in Congress. Since that time, the U.S. Capitol and its stately Dome have become international symbols of our representative democracy.

The stairs leading to the Capitol’s East Front porticos  were built principally from 1863 to 1865, contemporary with the Dome. In the mid-20th century, the marble originally used for the steps was replaced with granite. This ornament is crafted with marble dust from those first steps, creating a truly special memento.
